Youthful and Passionate about Life
Nicholas Munene Mutuma, commonly known as Nick, describes himself as an ambitious self-driven individual who HOPES to change the world! At 22, he has managed to establish himself in the film/entertainment industry as a force to reckon with. The Nation newspaper (Kenya’s most read paper) named him one of the people to look out for in the year 2010.
Munene landed his first acting stint in May 2008 in a locally produced drama series called Tabasamu. That same year he went on to clinch a principal role (Richard Mbotela) in an M-Net drama TV series Changes which is now in its second season & watched in over forty countries. His breakthrough on the global entertainment scene came in 2009 when he got a role as Leo in the MTV HIV/AIDS awareness series dubbed Shuga.
He says, “HIV/AIDS has always been real to me. I have lost friends and relatives and have an aunt who is living positively. I got tested a few days after we were done filming Shuga because I didn’t know my status. My character (Leo) advocated for circumcision, correct and consistent use of condoms, testing and killing the stigma attached to HIV. Getting tested for me was my first step in showing my commitment of serving as an example to Kenyan Youth. "
Apart from acting, Munene is also a musician. He has a few music projects set to debut this year. He describes his music as a fusion of Hip hop and African sound (Benga, zouk, genge). His first audio track dubbed Shuga is already on You Tube and has over 600 views.
Munene is currently working with One FM; a youthful urban radio station that plays Local & Urban music i.e. music from Kenya and the rest of Africa where he heads the Promotion & Events department. Asked why he chose to work instead of focus on his acting career he says, "I graduated last year with a degree in International Business Administration & felt it was important that I put it to use. "
Munene says that this is just the beginning. He has his eyes set on both the African and International film industries. Besides acting, he hopes to also direct movies and TV programs. “I want to leave a legacy. I want to be involved in memorable projects that influence the world around me.”
